Our Projects
Elephant
The elephant enclosure at Beijing Zoo has benefitted from the kind support of Goldman Sachs Gao Hua investment banking team volunteers, who under the banks Community Teamworks program assisted the Golden Bird Foundation to enhance the visitor area according to the design programme by creating rain forest canvases and they constructed a number of durable toys and instruments to make noise. Art designer for our GBF volunteers Mr. Wei Hai created a fresco. Mr Wei Hai also directed and designed the GBF painting on the inner Chimp zone in Beijing zoo.

Data collection on scent marking effects on behavior
Jazzy (named by one of our volunteers, an investment banker) the Clouded Leopard had an old enclosure at Beijing Zoo, it lacked any natural shade or places to hide there was no plant/foliage or natural resting substrate / ground cover. The exhibit was designed with Carin Harrington, Adrian Harrison and Jasmine Zhang. For advice on plant suitability and enhanced enrichment we had input from Dr. Graham Law cloud leopard specialist in UK.
Working with a team of volunteers, the Golden Bird Foundation installed a natural wood bedding system, plants and trees as well as toys balls that hang from the ceiling. This improvement, while simple, provided a new environment which has had a distinct positive impact on Jazzy's behaviour and quality of life. We collected behavioural data before and after the enrichment enhancements. With a masters student we collected data on scent marking enrichment and behaviour in captive leopards which was published in a scientific journal.
Freddy the Macaque
Freddy the male pig tail macaque previously was kept with his mate in a barren enclosure. The pair exhibited a high degree of aggression. Designed and planned with GBF and with Jasmine and Adrian investment bankers and additional volunteers led by Bob Zhou and February Xin worked to develop and install a swinging bed and enrichment devices for the primates and they also painted the entire enclosure to resemble a jungle scene to improve its appearance and the message that the animals should be in a more natural environment. Many Behavioural enrichment devices were added and resting hammocks as well as ropes and branches. Aggressive behaviour was reduced and exploration activity increased. Freddy and partner had a son who we called Josef in the festive season. The successful reproduction and reduced aggression was testimony to the successful enrichment programme.
